ATTENTION ALL - DISCLAIMER: If you one of my patnas and you happen to fall into the things i'm about to say dont get mad at me! These are REALISTIC VIEWS and OPINIONS of MINE with no bias! This will be long so if you dont want to read my thoughts goodbye!!!
First off some of you cats need to realize this music business AINT FOR YOU! When the first thing out yo mouth is "Ain't nobody fuckin wit me" and you DON'T have a project, single, etc in the mix you might want to eat them words. If you HONESTLY think that pressing anything under 5k units will make an impact you're mistaking. Performing all the time at OPEN MIC's and opening for people DOES NOT equate to a CAREER. Being "THAT NIGGA" rapping in ya hood DONT PAY BILLS!
I don't understand why artists rather rap over TRACKS ALREADY DONE BY MAJOR ARTISTS or tagged up beats instead of paying the producer. Plus when you REMAKE that record, if it's not as good as or better than the one that is playing NATIONALLY you have waisted your time and effort and if you shot a video to it you have your priorities jacked up!
2 things are a must in this BUSINESS, 1. BUDGET (without this and you just making music it WONT work) and 2. PLANNING (without this you will spin ya wheels and wont see progression)! The music is the easy part. If you still trying to drop ya album, mixtape, ep or single and you been rappin for OVER 10 years with no real units moved on your own STOP, IT AINT GONE HAPPEN FOR YA! Too many artist think after 100 people (in your area) say "I LIKE your song" or you get a few views on ya youtube video they should be signed, NEWS FLASH, labels are NOT signing artists that are not proven in some manner and its STILL hard for the ones who are because the industry as a whole has went down! If you dont have a buzz in a FEW states or multiple areas outside yours or you're "plugged in", you can get that thought out ya head.
If you do NOT know how to maximize the social media times we are in you need to quit or HIRE someone who does. It's 2012 people and some of you rappers DONT know how to use an email! REALLY? Say what ya want but if you cant use a computer you might as well throw in da towell because thats how a great majority of business is done today! If you dont do computers you dont really want this as much as you think. Talent comes all day so what makes you stand out!
Truth is 70% of ALL rappers will NOT make ANY money. 15% will see monitary $$$ but wont really make it to the next stage. 10% will have regional success. 5% will be able to see national success. Invest in yourself and if you DONT atleast break even after a few years you have an EXPENSIVE HOBBY! Success is measured by the person but REALISTICALLY you might want to rethink your position in the game!!!
Artists PLEASE STOP name dropping about who you know and who deal with! Know it or not the "industry" is small and folks will call and check on you and if you don't REALLY deal with these people you can get put out a circle before you get in one! If you do get a number one someone that doesen't mean you do business or kick it with that person! It's not a good look!
I've been seeing too much flexing bout deals so here is the real... YOU ARE NOT SIGNED TO A MAJOR COMPANY WITh DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION THROUGH TUNECORE! If we go on the main website and you, your logo or company name if not there you look foolish! You dont have the machine behind you and it will never be! Plus if ya ask me cdbaby is WAY better!
TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR PROJECT! ATLEAST mix you music if you cant afford to get it mastered! The main thing that can turn off a dj or radio jocky, bad sound quality! The few cats that are ALREADY NATIONAL ARTISTS have a machine and a WAY BIGGER audience that deals with them so they can get away with alot more than you can. Plus it sounds horrible when you do have a show and nobody can get into it cuz its too low or high and distorted! Get with a QUALITY graphic designer for your presentation! Just cuz ya patna can make something and they're free or very cheap done mean it will appeal to the masses. You get what you pay for and MARKETING (key word: MARKETING) bullshit will get you bullshit!
Last but not least if you can', don't or won't travel you lose in this business! You cats ride round the hood for hours and get nothing done! Take them same few hours and go somewhere WITH PRODUCT! If you do shows and leave soon as you finish (like you already a star) and dont leave someone with something promotional you lose again! 50 niggaz on stage, 0 flyers or cds in the club! Does that make sense?! NO!!!
